HKU Statement

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is aware of recent social media posts claiming that it is possible to apply to HKU through an agent, with promises of low entrance requirements and direct admission without standard grades, IELTS or TOEFL scores, undergraduate backgrounds, or other requirements. These claims are totally unfounded and the University reserves the right to pursue legal action against those responsible.

HKU does not authorise any intermediary organisations to recruit or admit students in Mainland China, nor does it have a so-called "internal recommendation" mechanism for professors to recommend non-local students for admission. Non-local applicants interested in applying to HKU must directly submit their applications to the University, and only eligible applicants who meet the necessary requirements will be considered for admission. Admissions are competitive and on merit basis.

If students are found to have falsified their academic credentials, HKU will take disciplinary action against them in accordance with University Statutes to revoke their student status.

Faculty of Education
Faculty of Education
The Faculty of Education (the Faculty) was established in The University of Hong Kong in 1984, having previously been a department in the Faculty of Arts and then a School of Education. However, the University has been involved in teacher education since 1917, and to this day it remains a major provider of teacher education in Hong Kong. The Faculty is forward-looking. It has assumed an important role in educational research and professional training in the region and internationally, and has contributed significantly to education policy and development in Hong Kong. It is a major teacher-education institution and has strong expertise in policy analysis and curriculum development. It became the first institution in Hong Kong to train speech therapists and audiologists for the local community. The Faculty is committed to building its expertise and has strengthened its capacity by recruiting diverse, highly qualified scholars and students internationally. Our scholars come from many different parts of the world, including North America, Europe, Asia (Central, South, South-East and East, including Hong Kong and Mainland China) and Australasia. The Faculty has more than 100 fulltime academic staff, many of whom are very well known internationally. In addition to performing teaching duties, academic staff engage in an extensive range of research and they lead both local and international projects. Many of our colleagues sit on advisory committees contributing to the formulation of policies related to local and international education. With the diverse staff and student body, the Faculty maintains high academic and research standards, and has a reputation as an international centre of excellence.

Faculty of Law
Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) traces its origins to 1969, when a Department of Law was established within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Beginning with three teachers and 40 students, the Department offered a three-year LLB degree and, from 1972, a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL). The department was Hong Kong's first law school, and its LLB and PCLL were the first local university qualifications to be recognized for admission to legal practice in Hong Kong. Formerly, all barristers and most solicitors had trained and qualified in the United Kingdom. Law had been taught at HKU in the 1920s and 1930s, but only as part of a broad-based Arts curriculum. From 1964 to 1969 the Department of Extra-mural Studies at HKU had also taught part-time courses leading to an external LLB degree from the University of London. The law school at HKU was designed to increase the supply of lawyers, train lawyers in Hong Kong law rather than just English law, and make formal legal education available without the need for students to go overseas. From a teaching department in 1969 to a Faculty today with about 2,500 students and over 80 full-time academic staff from about 17 jurisdictions, the Faculty of Law has been the training ground of many distinguished legal minds. Generations of lawyers who graduated from the Faculty now form the backbone of the legal profession and protect the Rule of Law in Hong Kong, which is crucial to the success of the territory. The Faculty is committed to academic and professional excellence in meeting the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. While the Faculty has gone a long way from its inception, it continues its efforts in international outreach, in strengthening the ties with Mainland China, and in enhancing the quality of legal education with a view to train not just good lawyers but also leaders who have a passion to serve, wherever they are.
