Overview

The Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics [MDS(Prostho)] programme is designed to enable students to provide diagnosis and treatment of patients of all ages with malformations or loss of tissues in the jaws or face and functional disorders of the masticatory system; and involves replacement of missing teeth and tissues with fixed, removable and implant prostheses thereby restoring health, oral functions, comfort and appearance. The MDS(Prostho) programme is recognized by the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK) as the only accredited clinical training for Hong Kong dentists pursuing specialty training in prosthodontics. Graduates of the programme are eligible to sit for the Intermediate Examination in Prosthodontics of CDSHK, the Membership examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, i.e., MProsRCS(Edin) and The Membership examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, i.e., MRACDS(Pros). The programme includes the following key modules:

Core courses
Oral epidemiology, research methodology, statistical analysis, biomaterials, dissertation writing.

Cross-disciplinary courses
Aesthetic dentistry, cariology, gerodontology and medically compromised patients, sedation course, interdisciplinary treatment planning sessions, joint Endodontology/Periodontology/Prosthodontics seminars, practice and risk management workshops.

Prosthodontic-specific courses
Digital Dentistry
‧ Clinical exposure to a variety of facial/intra-oral/laboratory scanners, photogrammetry, cone beam CT, digital smile design, digital implant planning and design of surgical guide, full digital workflow for planning and fabrication of fixed/removable prostheses as well as implant crowns and prostheses.

Implant prosthodontics
‧ Diagnosis and treatment planning using a multidisciplinary approach with hands-on experience in the management of a full range of cases, from single-tooth replacement to complete rehabilitation using fixed/removable implant prostheses.
‧ Clinical exposure to the major implant systems, surgical placement of implants in selected cases and management of implant failures such as fractured screws.

Fixed prosthodontics
‧ Management of advanced restorative cases including full mouth rehabilitation, localized/generalized tooth wear with or without changing the vertical dimension of occlusion using adhesive, conventional and/or CAD/CAM restorations.
‧ Laboratory course on wax-ups, teeth set-up, ceramics, CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing.
‧ Clinical exposure to crown-lengthening surgery with the Discipline of Periodontology.

Removable prosthodontics
‧ Management of complex partially dentate and edentulous cases using various removable partial and complete denture technologies such as precision attachment, rotational pathway denture, overdenture, copy denture, neutral zone technique and CAD/CAM denture.

Maxillofacial prosthodontics
‧ Diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with head and neck cancers using a multidisciplinary approach.
‧ Management of congenital/acquired defects in the orofacial region using removable, fixed and implant- retained prostheses.
‧ Planning and management of jaw reconstruction cases with the Discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Temporomandibular disorders
‧ Diagnosis and management of patients with temporomandibular disorders using a multidisciplinary approach.
‧ Hands-on experience of different conservative treatment modalities including splint therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Entrance Requirements

1.  A BDS degree from this University or an equivalent qualification.

2.  A minimum of one year of work experience would be preferable.

Faculty of Dentistry
The HKU Faculty of Dentistry is unique in Hong Kong for dental education and is widely considered as the premier centre for postgraduate dental education and training globally.

Our students receive top-tier education and have access to state-of-the-art learning facilities at the newly established specialist dental clinic - The Institute for Advanced Dentistry Multi-Specialty Clinic (IAD-MSC), which is located in Sai Wan. The IAD-MSC is a Centre of Excellence designed to manage complex and severe oral conditions.

In addition to the IAD-MSC, the Faculty is equipped, with various other facilities, such as a Simulation
Laboratory for dental students' self-practice, a comprehensive and advanced library holdings, and a Lounge. All of these facilities are located at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital (PPDH), which is about 5 -10 mins walk away from the University's Main Campus on Pokfulam Road.

There are also many other teaching facilities and amenities for students' use on the Main Campus and the Centennial Campus, including the impressive and popular Student Learning Commons.

Our professoriate and teaching staff are internationally recognized experts in their fields with diverse academic backgrounds. We also have a highly-skilled and dedicated staff, including dental surgery assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians and laboratory technicians, to assist students with their learning.

Our taught postgraduate programmes are highly esteemed and cover ten subject areas leading to the Master of Science (MSc) degrees, the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) Degrees and professional Advanced Diploma, which build on the MDS Degree. Many of these programmes fulfil the specialist training requirements of dental specialties of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.

A limited number of self-financing places are available in each specialty programme, and some government-funded places may be available for local candidates. Candidates who are interested in studying the MDS degree in a specific specialty are advised to apply for admissions to the relevant curriculum. Candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria for the government-funded places and have demonstrated academic merit may be offered a place within the government-funded quota of places.
